APplication Strand

This strand (Figure 5.8) resembles the Skill Blueprint’s APplication strand. The teacher provides scenarios that prompt a mental review of the pattern and skill, suggests a pause to check thinking against the pattern, and encourages use of the skill to address the scenario.

With Elisa’s guidance and support, the students listen to a short story problem (AP-ex), identify the important details (i.e., numbers) within the story problem (AP-co), consider the pattern the short story illustrates (e.g., are two groups coming together to form one larger group?) (AP-el), and then solve the problem and label the result (AP-ap). This series of steps repeats for several short story problems, allowing the students enough practice so that they can recognize a story problem that requires addition by themselves and then do the addition to find the sum. Elisa lessens her guidance and support as students gain accuracy and confidence, but she continues to assess them formatively and supply feedback as needed. Such practice prepares students for the INtention Strand.
